Devil Summoner 2 Review, PS2

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2 is a game set in Japan, around the 1920s. A mysterious, beautiful woman requests for Raidou Kuzunoha’s help in locating a missing person Dahn. So, as Rauidou, the 14th Devil Summoner, you set off on your quest with your two loyal companions - a smart-talking cat Gouto & Detective Narumi. But the investigation that starts off as a search for a missing person turns into a full-fledged battle between good & evil (in this case, the wicked King Abaddon).

As the demon-fighting Raidou intent on saving Tokyo from impending doom, you can call upon other devils to assist you in bashing up crooked monsters. You could also persuade unfriendly demons to join you. This involves considerable negotiating skills. Different devils possess diverse supernatural powers & you can earn more points as you build your collection. Raidou’s other skills include an impressive use of swords and guns, as well as amazing agility while dodging attacks.

The animation and soundtrack are good. The real time combats are fun, though the fixed camera can be frustrating. The “investigation” part is a bit of a drag, as the clues are not well-conveyed. A decent voice-over would’ve certainly helped improve the game’s appeal.

A sequel by to the Shin Megami Tensei series by Atlus, USA, this role-playing game is a much better version of the former, with all the extra features that hardcore PS2 fans were looking out for.
